Treating Your New Shed or Garden Building

New Garden Shed

When a shed is being made for you the factories we use treat the buildings inside and out with wood preservative. This is called a 'base coat' and will provide the shed with enough treatment for delivery and to survive the first month or two.

The inside of the building will last much longer than the outside as it is protected from the weather and the sun which dry out the treatment and will hardly have to be touched again.

The outside will need to be treated quite soon again when you first have the shed assembled, as the new pine will soak up the first treatment the factory supply and we recommend to treat it within a month or two especially around the facia boards and the doors to stop them swelling and drying out.

We then recommend to treat the building on an annual basis. Early spring is a great time. This is to protect it from the hot summer sun and the winter. We recommend using a solvent based treatment and to brush it on slowly.

As the wood we use is a high quality redwood Pine on most of our buildings this will soak in the treatment year after year and help keep the colour, protect it and the rot away!

It really is worth taking the time to treat your buildings as this will give many more years and longevity to the shed for you to enjoy in the garden!

We always stock Barrettine 5L cans of treatment here at our Show Site in St.Albans, Hertfordshire.
