.....Before You Construct Your New Shed Base

This is to help any one who is about to start their base for their new garden building, remember if you do not want to get your hands dirty we always have a local recommended base layer to help out and provide a quote for you. His details are at the bottom of this page and on our main website.

All of our sizes quoted when you come to our show site are the approx. sizes for the building to sit on. They all have floor joists attached to the floor to allow airflow under the building. If you do order a building with an additional roof Verandah or Balcony remember this must also be included in your floor size as all our buildings and Verandahs come with floors.

Have you allowed for any steps or space around the base for all doors and windows to open fully?

We recommend laying the base near enough the same size foot print as the building you order to reduce water splash back on the bottom boards. A good tip is to lay some stone/shingle 20mm all around the base when it is laid to help drain excess water and puddles or maybe fit a gutter in the long term if you are getting splash back and you already have paving or concrete there.

All of our buildings have a roof overhang needing at least 6-8" minimum from any post, fence or wall. Remember large sized buildings will also usually need clear and reasonable access all around the base for the assemblers to lift the heavy roof and Panels in place. This will also allow them to reach most parts of the shed or garden building and facia boards etc. Please ask our sales staff if you are unsure before you construct your base.

Ideally you do not want to squeeze the building in too tight to the fence, wall or hedge as the shed will need to be treated annually all round with wood preserver and being organic need to breath a little as well.

It will be protected from the sun next to a fence but always allow enough for at least a roller to get some treatment on in those tight spaces to prolong the life of the shed.

Also remember any building over 15m sq floor size may also require building regulations so please check with your local authority before constructing your base on buildings over this size.

This is a good website to help as a guide as well as checking with your own local authority.

There are many ways to lay a shed base but here at Millers we have always recommend laying it totally solid, flat and perfectly level and square (the roof will take the fall of the water as you require the floor to sit level so the doors and sides stay straight). We recommend that the shed base sits slightly higher than ground level so water does not get back under the building. Remember to check the most important bit, that the diagonal distances are the same to make sure it is square!
